Story

When rampant industrialization ruined the climate in the 21st century, human society collapsed.
Decades of pestilence, catastrophic storms, and war ravaged the population. Corporations
raced to find a solution.
It came in the form of a self-replicating nanobot swarm that adapted the human body to any
climate and cured all disease. With time, the swarm spread itself to every person on earth and
society began to rebuild. The richest among us even began to improve their abilities, gaining
powers that belonged in the world of fiction. It was a golden age of technological advancement
and superheroics…
But inequality breeds discontent. The Z-Pox was a nanobot virus meant to bring down a team of
supercops. Instead, it spread through the entire population like wildfire, turning the swarm
against its hosts. No one was spared the infection and the ensuing zombie plague wiped out
over half the world’s population before a stopgap treatment was developed.
Now, 200 years in the future, the remainders of humanity cling to old comforts in independent
city states far from the burnt ring of the equator. Massive corporations have control of every
remaining country on the planet and maintain their power through profits from Fexatrine, an
expensive daily treatment. The rich live life like superpowered kings in increasingly stratified
cities while the poor struggle in dangerous slums to avoid their inevitable fates. However,
without treatment, anyone can go Active, a feral zombie state that compels the body to feed on
other humans to absorb raw materials for nano reproduction.

Z STRAIN – The unknown virus that infected the Powerhumans. The Z Nano inside them mutates the virus and bonds with it, creating the Z Strain. The Z Strain mutates within the human body, causing similar effects of the Z Nano, but instead of enhancing the human body the Z Strain distorts it into a blood-craving monster.

STAGES OF Z-STRAIN

INFECTED – Everyone is infected in some way or another. The early stages have very few visible symptoms, as the virus lays dormant for up to two weeks. The infection is permanent and must be constantly maintained with vaccines to avoid a progression of the disease.

RULES/Z INFO

Humans – Regular people infected with the Z Nano causing minor resistance to hunger and other damage. Infection levels vary in severity, requiring anything from an oral dose of meds once a month to a daily shot.

Actives – Nanoviral breakdown of the tissues and brain occur in these individuals. The longer a person remains in an active state, the less likely their chances of recovering. Three weeks without a dosage of meds is considered the standard point of no return. Actives can survive up to the peak of Nano replication, at which point the cells within them consist more of Nano bots than actual cells, literally crumbling apart and decomposing. The consumption of organic matter slows the degradation process, particularly in humans.

Powerhumans – A tiny portion of the population is born with enhanced biological functions due to the original super-soldier construction of the Z Nano.

Variants

Super Actives – People in extreme distress during a time when they have not had a vaccination can sometimes experience massive muscle growth and stamina as the Nanovirus inside them attempts to transform them into a stronger predator. This physical power comes at a cost however, as they become far more difficult to turn back into humans. Their bodies will generally burn out from the stress, within a matter of days.

Feral Actives – Some colonies in the Wasteland area are full of half-starved people driven mad by constantly teetering on the edge of death. These places seem more like what you would expect to find in a Zombified area with Shambling husk people living entirely on blind instinct. Generally to stay alive, Ferals must be extremely cunning and without fear.

Corpse Bloat – Bodies of larger Actives have a tendency to fill up with methane during the Nanovirus’s frantic attempts to capitalize on the organic matter. These bodies are hazardous to other humans as they can often rupture and spray an area with extremely virulent Nanos.

Active Dead – Prematurely killed Actives or seriously infected humans who die before their body is fully destroyed can often continue functioning for up to 24 hours. As the Nano virus in the body is attempting to continue its survival, bites or fluid transfers from the Active Dead are exceedingly dangerous.
